The app crashes a lot. The trips won't update and if you try to do anything in the app longer than a minute, it crashes. The beacon is way too sensitive. I get dinged for acceleration simply entering onto the freeway at the freeway speeds. Our entry is really short. An experiment late at night showed that I would need to enter the freeway at 50MPH to not get dinged, which is extremely dangerous! The freeway is 65MPH. I had an average of 95 and above for the first few months I had the app.
This is my last month before my renewal and it has consistently rated me very low by giving me low scores for speeding and acceleration. It said I was speeding in a 60 mph zone when I had my cruise control on When I hit the area in the highway where the speed limit increases to 65 it immediately shows where I am speeding when I increase my speed to I work off of this highway and travel in the 65 mph area frequently.
I drive a 6 speed and it also gives me low ratings when I turn onto busy roads where you have to turn onto them and get moving or get ran over. It is not a high rate of acceleration but just moving with the traffic to keep it moving. I was told by my agent that your discount does not depend on these scores and it is mostly determined by the number of miles you drive. I drive less than 7k per year. I live 2. The commercials give a completely different story. I believe it is a device that is not accurate as i can prove by it saying I sped when I was going the speed limit and I will leave State Farm if I do not get a good discount.
The app doesn't work properly. Just the other day, I was on my way to work, which is about an hour drive and it ended my drive in the middle of the road, about 10 min away from my work! Then it picked up back again at the same stop and ended at my house. It doesn't make sense and its seriously getting me in trouble! I was told that phone use doesn't go against your score. OH and my boyfriend and I just took a huge roadtrip last month over 5K miles and it didn't even record the mileage.
It makes no sense! I emailed my agent to see if anyone else has reported it. I have to log out and back in to get trips to update.
The braking dings you get are not good. Sometimes you have to brake hard because someone ahead of you made a last minute choice or turned in front of you. I know the app can't differentiate but it sucks that your score gets dinged for avoiding an accident. The app does not take into consideration road or traffic conditions. Here is one example: I was traveling in the city where I live and a driver pulled in front of me a d stopped in my lane.
I slammed on the brakes and barely avoided a disastrous accident. I was going the speed limit. The app told me that I had a hard braking event and told how I could have braked differently. I guess having an accident is better than an event? I have a lot more examples of events that were not events. I understand it needs access to location services to properly work while you are driving but they want access to your location even when you aren't driving and using the app.
Current versions of Android allow you to provide access while the app is in use so it doesn't need my location at all times. Currently this app as it functions is an invasion of privacy and little better than spyware. Just dinged for using my phone…parked…at my house. I got dinged for stopping slowly at a stop sign and then again for slowing to yield on a right turn.
It also dings me for going the speed limit. If I drive 10 below the speed limit other drivers are going to get angry with me. Re: to App Developer. It doesn't allow for real world situations and downgrades you for things beyond your control. Ridiculous that it downgrades you for using the GPS on your phone as a phone distraction. Also, it stays recording your trip for 15 minutes after you've arrived so if you use your phone you get a phone distraction downgrade.
This needs to be fixed!!! Sensors are extremely sensitive with braking. Often I get dinged for having to suddenly brake when other cars stop or cut me off. So I should just hit other cars then? I'm lost but I'm testing this out for six months to see if the actual savings is worth the headache of having to get penalties for driving defensively because people are morons.
The app was working perfectly fine until they did an update on it, and now it's annoying. Whenever I want to check what my score is, I open the app and it makes me enable my Bluetooth, and it tells me to "get started" when there's nothing for me to start because I've been using it for months.
Unless I'm driving with it, I don't keep my Bluetooth on because it drains my battery. Now it has to be turned on for me to even check anything when it wasn't like that before the update. I hate that it has to use my phone at all.
I had a Tiwi box in a work vehicle once and it did everything itself. My wife is one of the most cautious drivers I know and she still frequently gets flagged for events while driving. She drives like a grandma but the app claims she brakes hard, turns hard, etc. Same for my driving as well. One time I noticed I was going a little fast and when I looked down I was going maybe 7 or 8 over. I backed off immediately but the app claimed I was going 12 over in that spot.
My wife was in the car and also noticed my speed, which was not 12 over. How could it NOT? It affects the score which does affect the discount! It does not mean it is me playing a game or watching Netflix while driving.
I have seen a lot of reviews asking about this- but no one seems to address it if one of the developers actually responds! Just the cookie cutter review to check the FAQs.
Which DOES affect the discount. I also am a nurse and use WAZE- I drive around and need a map, which was made for this purpose to be used while driving! We are another family that will be leaving State Farm.
This app drains battery by constantly running in the background. Also, it give me a 1 star rating on phone usage while driving anywhere and says that I am using my phone constantly while only using GPS. The new version is better than old, I will say that. Probably will check out Allstate since they actually reward you for being a good driver rather than collecting a lot of data about you and probably selling it to someone.
The longer I am using the app the more I am getting frustrated with it. I am not a person who know all the ways in the US so with that I am using the google map and of course the scores in the drive and save app goes down so quick that it will damages the score. I was driving to a family emergency and it recorded the way up very poorly driving around Chicago -no brainer more braking more acceleration and, and , and , but the way back none of it was recorded.
Had everything on Bluetooth and location and no recordings. But I am home. I got phone calls which my Husband answers and it shows phone use and more points down. I life in the country of course we are having deers , raccoon and other animals running around.
What should I supposed to do, let them jump on the car? Of course you use the brakes , and points down. It is getting really more frustrating with this app. I will give it back to State Farm because I have no accidents or tickets, I can say about my self and Family that we are good drivers.
No control needed for twenty bucks savings. My Drive Safe and Save app was updated to the newest version and now I can go in and click on an icon to see where I have been dinged. Not to mention, it penalizes me whenever I need to use my GPS and have it on.
Our renewal discount was seemingly toast after an odometer update glitch that indicates we never submitted the latest mileage. Totally false and we spent two weeks fighting it.
Had proof of submissions online via the web browser, which they didn't seem to look at or have access to. I get 5 stars in all categories and a 1 or 2 star for phone use because I looked at my map or someone else grabbed my phone, my 2 week score is shot. Not a very accurate depiction of the remaining categories. The second category should show phone use average score over two weeks. I think this app encourages unsafe driving.
When you have to stop quickly at a yellow light it dings you for braking too hard. I found myself braking too softly when traffic ahead of me began stopping because I didn't want a penalty and then having to stop much harder to avoid collisions until I recognized what I was doing. It will ding you for speeding when all you're doing is driving with the flow of traffic It's only real value is reporting phone use while driving. And you better hope you never have to gun it to get in front of rush hour traffic when leaving your neighborhood without a stop light They said it was because we drove so much.
This app is a nightmare. Its data tracking ability is both invasive and at the same time cannot account for real world scenarios. Need to use your phone for touch-less payment in the drive-thru? Too bad! Your braking score just went down. Want to have a log of every place you go and when? Me neither.
Share a vehicle? State Farm says it is about giving you a discount, even though they are really just giving you a graduated rebate on the price hikes they make regularly. If you see a deer and are able to stop, causing you to slam on the brakes, there is a mark. Accelerating for pretty much any reason gives you a mark, which is a little unfair as certain points where you merge onto a highway you have to accelerate a little faster than normal.
Speeding is too critical of a mark as it does not matter whether you are speeding a little to get around another driver, going down a hill even though your car is on cruise , or you simply do not slow down enough in time. It seems as though if you go one mile over the speed limit for anything more than a second, it gives you a mark which I think is a little ridiculous..
So I have a new car with Apple car play and I have a handy little button on my steering wheel that I can use to ask Siri to do something for me. Another issue that drives me nuts is that my car has a regenerative brake behind the steering wheel that is a little different than the foot pedal brake. It can be a little aggressive depending on the grade of the road. It constantly lowers my braking score. I find this whole thing completely ridiculous since when I started driving over twenty years ago.
Good drivers got better rates because it was easy to tell by how many points on their drivers license. Now I feel like I have given up my privacy and some stupid box judges my driving with no context of driving conditions just to save a few more dollars. However, the way the scoring is now is not in the best interest of the individual. But why would an insurance company do that? Anyway, the scoring for the speeding and phone use is pretty ridiculous.
The speeding score is horrible if you do a lot of highway driving. You always want to keep up with traffic. You may go above the limit on a good day. If that is what traffic is doing then why would you go slower to disrupt it.
That can cause issues. So, the score would be very poor if you go along with traffic. I am not happy at all with my scores in these sections. This app needs to be fixed in these regards. Or even just go back to the old way of scoring just keep the new look. Either way, do something to fix these issues! Enough people are complaining about it. The updated version of the app provides far less useful information than the previous version. It shows me all my trips i guess?
The user interface is terrible.. It no longer shows you your trending discount or lets you compare drivers or vehicles in your household. Overall does make driver pay attention to braking and acceleration. However it does not take into consideration when a posted speed limit is inadequate and if the driver does said speed limit the driver becomes a hazard to self and rest of people on road by impeding traffic nor does it consider the idiot who cuts you off and you have to slam on brakes. I do not know how to put the intelligence to it to fix it however to have to be monitored to receive discounts is an asinine big brother authoritative intimidating move anyway.
There is no comprehensible way to make this an accurate tool for driver performance in fact as I have shown makes ALL traffic more susceptible to unsafe conditions. If I could give negative stars I would. Obviously I will be canceling this program soon and if rates go up too much there are plenty other players in the game:.
I maintain 1 car length for every 10mph, but if the vehicle ahead of me makes a sudden decision to stop or turn without a signal, just what does the app expect me to do? The app software needs to be adjusted to reflect that. Otherwise many of us are theoretically getting our premiums bumped up for erroneous reasons.
All our driving has been in another car. Since I've started using the app I have enjoyed a fair discount to my policy fee. However, the app has several key flaws.
App requires Location services be on all the time. This drains battery life and is, frankly, unnecessary as no one drives all the time.
App frequently "times out" while on the road, after roughly 30 minutes on highway. I suspect this is due to my power settings shutting off screen after several minutes , but that I have to log in again while I'm on the road seems both counterintuitive and unsafe. Scorecard mechanism seems off. Not sure how the nitwit engineers weight this, but it's overly punitive to people who drive at normal speeds eg 65 in a To my knowledge, there is no longitudinal performance tracking, just a past two-week summary.
This is inherently myopic and does not permit long-term trend analysis or any way for someone to correct bad driving habits. Apparently I drove somewhere today and never made it home. I often have people use my phone and navigate- tell me where to go. Using a map is quite different from texting. No one uses gps anymore. If I unlock my phone to see a map, also unfair. Part of the reason we have our phones are for finding locations.
Not all phone usage is inappropriate and harmful. Otherwise, if they would get those bugs fixed, seems pretty accurate. I do a lot of highway driving, this means there are days where traffic is faster than usual and above posted speed limit. Traffic never goes beyond 80 mph. I can have a perfect score everywhere else but the moment I speed, boom, 1 star trip.
I can almost guarantee that my speed is being compared to the posted speed limit. Just come out and say that you are comparing it with posted speed limits and it will affect savings.
If there was a zero star rating, i would have done it. Play music Phone usage: should not be tracked if vehicle is NOT in motion. Should not be tracked if passenger is using phone. It should come on when within range of the Bluetooth and off at all other times. To now be penalized for doing so is counterintuitive. Great idea - poor implementation. It wants direct access to Bluetooth so it can work with its beacon. Did you know that also allows it to see every other Bluetooth device around you, and can be used for cross network tracking when coordinated with other services on other phones?
Their agreement says you agree to release them from liability if they misplace your data for any reason hacked, sell it to Zuckerberg, etc. I disagree, where do I throw the red challenge flag? So yes, I can be bribed for the right price. Pro: It has a good user interface, making it easy to reveal the full extent of its horrors.
Take a 2nd star for that. This happened on two of four of my trips today. Unfortunately I have found there is no good way to report possible bugs in the app and include screenshots for reference. In addition to this, over the last couple of weeks I have noticed trips not being recorded ex. I go to store from point A to B and trip is recorded but when I go back home from point B to A trip is not recorded despite a fully charged battery, good cell reception, proper location preferences, proper beacon placement same spot since I first installed it , no phone memory issues, no beacon battery issues and lengthy enough trip.
I am a grandmother and drive my Subaru Forester accordingly. This app is so prissy that I get low marks for acceleration when others are getting out of my lane to go faster and everyone else is way ahead of me after a stop light. One is also penalized for sudden braking. I am wondering if State Farm would prefer for me to brake forcefully or plow into the side of the car that turned in front of me. Very, very disappointed with this app. This is an update several months later.
This app is a disaster. I continue to be disappointed in the app and have complained to my State Farm agent several times. I think the app was designed to be so picky that it infuriates users to the point that they just quit using it.
I have been driving for 53 years. During that time, I have received one speeding ticket, and was in one minor accident during a snowstorm. I am a ridiculously careful driver and only drive about 8, miles per year.
State Farm should be happy to have me as a customer. Not at all sure that they are. The device and app should definitely give the option to put that a passenger is using my phone while I am driving. As well as while I am driving longer then 30 minutes my child or children get very inpatient so they love watching a tv show or playing a game on my phone so it rates me poorly.
As well as a passenger trying to reroute google maps for me because of traffic ahead. The situations that are frustrating is one, this app does not recognize 3 point turns, but judges them as unsafe; and, two, school zones which register as 25 miles per hour on one side of the school, but have a 35 mile per hour on the other side do not show up as 35, but are still at Maybe the latter is just my vehicle. You may laugh at this, as this is just a comment and not a negative, but my husband hates to ride with me because I observe all the signs and he wants to call State Farm and tell them that people driving the way I do is unsafe.
I observe more people than not observing street signs. I loved getting the 5 stars trips, but seeing those 3 and 4 star trips were demoralizing.
The scores are an average of all trips within the last 2 weeks which comprise of both drivers and all your vehicles as part of the program. As a result, it constantly fluctuates and you will see changes if you log into the app on a daily basis.
As I will talk about in the discounts section, we have been achieving great savings staying within this range. During the first few weeks of use, I looked at the app quite frequently. Like a true technologist, I was interested in seeing the data and how accurate the system was. In particular, what driving variables would make a perfect score. In reality, this has happened to some degree and probably better for the long-term.
From a positive aspect, I have become more patient turning onto busy streets. From a negative aspect, I wish the system had more tolerance on the acceleration aspect especially if you are driving under the speed limit and needing to zip by a car.
After about months of being in the program, I developed a good feel for the scoring system knowing what it takes to achieve the perfect trip. As a result, all of my trips generally normally fall into 0 events or at most 1 or 2 events per trip. As a result, her trips generally result in events per trip.
For our smart phones, they are configured to be active for both of our cars. When my wife and I are together, we are not able to easily control which smart phone is homed to the beacon since its done automatically.
In reality, I was the primary driver with no phone use while my wife was surfing using her phone as a passenger. The workaround is to force one phone to be active by turning off the bluetooth. We found that to be burdensome especially needing to remember to turn bluetooth back on at a later date. This makes sense as there will be less risk of getting into accidents during low traffic periods. As we entered into the 2nd full cycle, more pleasant surprises.
Like my bike in the garage, I have to remember to check the air in my tires before heading out. Hopefully this upward trend continues! Typically I would need to refuel around 1. A recommended best practice is to get in touch with your insurance agent on a yearly basis to review your policies and ensure you are taking advantage of all the discounts. As an example, life insurance coverage is something that should periodically be assessed.
